Solar Electric: In West Africa there is an amazing amount of sunshine and very little of it is used for electricity. Development of low tech and well thought out means of capturing solar energy in ways that can be easily reproduced is an area of research and development which has huge potential. The Bouaké campus will provide an ideal setting for the research and development of solar energy use. An understanding of solar energy and how to best capture and dispense this energy will be useful for anyone desiring to follow this track. A basic understanding of the use of solar panels, deep cell marine batteries, AC converters, storage issues, and other related issues would be essential. |

Alternative Diesel Fuels: With the big push in recent years for the development of bio-fuels, West Africa is the ideal setting for such efforts. West Africa, with its high capacity for producing vegetable matter in a very short time (harvesting, in some situations, 3 times per year) and its growing dependence on fossil-fuels, needs to develop its own fuels. With the rising price of crude oil and the growing disparity between the haves and the have-nots, any effort to counter this issue is welcome. Through the planting and harvesting of jatrapha, and other high oil content plants, the dependency on outside oil can be reduced and the quality of life in many places may be improved. An understanding of how bio-fuels are produced as well as their market potential would be necessary for anyone wanting to be involved in this track. |

Description:In many places throughout the world, farmers, ranchers, and sheepherders are experts in the areas of animal husbandry because they are taking care of a variety of animals according to their environment. Whether the practice is traditional or non traditional, animal husbandry is essential to the livelihood of an agrarian culture. You will learn how to engage the local communities by learning from their practice. All the Journey Corps tracks are meant to allow you to exercise your gifts and your passions. Tracks can expand or adjust to your skills, passions, and to the needs of the community.

Traditional Animal Husbandry This track will tend to be more rural in its orientation. It is possible that there may be several sub-categories to this track. Due to the nature of life in West Africa there is little lack of understanding of how to best raise sheep, goats, chickens, cows, and pigs. The struggles are in the areas of feasibility when it comes to appropriate methods used. Most villagers know that a pig pen is the better way to raise hogs, but they seldom have the means and they often lack the motivation to keep the pigs penned up. Anyone wanting to work in this area will certainly have their hands full as they attempt to bring understanding to villagers and attempt to change current practice.

Non-traditional Animal Husbandry Experiment in the raising of non-traditional livestock such as snails, cane rats, and bees. Snails are a rich source of protein and have many positive factors which make them an interesting investment for an urban situation. Cane rat is one of the most sought after meats in this part of the world, fetching prices of $10 to $15 per rat. It is commonly known as an “agouti” (not to be confused with the South American agouti which is an entirely different species) and is best known in Ghana as the “grass-cutter” which is its primary food. Developing this non-traditional source of meat which has such high value may be an important investment. Bees are the foundation on which most of food production is based on throughout the world. Bees are plentiful in West Africa, but unfortunately there has been little done in the way of developing good beekeeping practice. Most honey in West Africa is hunted and in the process bees are killed and hives are being destroyed, which is leading to poor production. This practice has made bees in Africa rather aggressive. If you should decide to follow this track, bring your smoker and outfit, because you will need it! A basic understanding of beekeeping methods would be good for anyone entering this track. |

Description: Bouaké is home to the second largest university in Côte d'Ivoire. Students, who attend the University of Bouaké for the most part, come from northern Côte d'Ivoire. There are numerous opportunities for anyone wanting to develop friendships with these students. Many of these students are seeking to improve their English skills and would be thrilled to speak with real live English speakers. The potential is great for anyone with the slightest desire to reach out to these students. All the Journey Corps tracks are meant to allow you to exercise your gifts and your passions. English Club: Universities in Côte d'Ivoire are notorious for student uprisings and general strikes. As a result students spend the majority of their time waiting for their professors to show up and dispense their courses. This means that there are many days when nothing is happening on the campus. Although it is not legal for a foreigner to teach English in any official class at the University (this is strictly reserved for Ivorian recognized professors), there is ample opportunity for clubs of many kinds which involve learning and practice opportunities. |
|
Friendship Outreach: University life can be difficult for students who are often left to their own for weeks on end. It is in this sort of environment that mature God fearing young men and women are needed to bring the light of the Good News. Opportunities to struggle alongside other young Jesus Followers will be numerous. Secular university campus life experience is essential for anyone wanting to enter this realm of ministry/learning. |

Description: It is our desire that everyone with Journey Corps will participate in the church activities in the local church in the region to which they are assigned. Obviously, because of the language issues, understanding will be a challenge. It is the firm belief of Journey Corps leadership: West Africa, that the best expression of the church is a cross-cultural one. Too often Christian expression becomes a part of what it means to be an “American”. Because of this, the true message of the Gospel often becomes clouded and is eventually lost. This same struggle is faced by any church and believers where Christianity becomes the majority expression. This internship and hopefully all of our internships are designed bring each volunteer to a place where he or she becomes intensely aware of what it means to be attached to God in the same way that King David was. All the Journey Corps tracks are meant to allow you to exercise your gifts and your passions. Tracks can expand or adjust to your skills, passions, and to the needs of the community.

Working alongside national pastors: This track will be an intensive learning experience as whoever is involved in this track will shadow a local pastor or several pastors as they carry out their ministry. This will certainly be more than the simple sermon preparation and a few visits during the week. It may actually involve helping a given pastor as he harvests his cotton for the year, or accompanying him as he visits the different churches for which he is responsible (in Côte d'Ivoire it is rare to find a pastor responsible for only one church). This track will certainly include participation in weddings and funerals as well as normal church meetings scheduled throughout a typical week. |

Location: Bouake, Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa Description:Ethnomusicology is the study of social and cultural music in local and global contexts. What that means for Christians doing ethnomusicology is worship. The goal is to help nationals learn how to worship God in a way that is relevant to their culture and music style. Often the tenancy is for new believers in another county to adopt western (american) musical styles, which may not be a heart style that allows the people to truly engage God. Journeyers will develop a program that allows them to learn the cultural dance and music of the various people groups in Cote d’Ivoire. This will be a cultural exchange, learning from the Ivoirian people and establishing relationships through music, dance, and culture. All the Journey Corps tracks are meant to allow you to exercise your gifts and your passions. Tracks can expand or adjust to your skills, passions, and to the needs of the community. |

Location: Bouake, Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa
Description: One of the unique qualities of this track is that the facilities journeyers will find themselves working alongside experienced Ivorian carpenters, plumbers, masons, welders, electricians and builders who will certainly approach a job with a different perspective than that of a facilities manager in the US or Europe. Working alongside these men will be an occasion for the journeyer to speak into the life of those he is working with in the same way that those nationals with whom he works will speak into his life. The point of this track is not to maintain facilities, although it is hoped that the facilities will not suffer loss, but to develop relationship. Relationships will develop with both the nationals and the Lord through a practical hands-on approach to life through the use of shovels hammers and saws. All the Journey Corps tracks are meant to allow you to exercise your gifts and your passions. Tracks can expand or adjust to your skills, passions, and to the needs of the community.

Description: This track will involve living and following classes with actual students on any one of the many leadership training institutions located throughout West Africa. Leadership training is the greatest need in the church in West Africa. This is taking place in a number of places in numerous ways, but not any one method of approach has been necessarily efficient. Leadership training is a hard and expensive enterprise. This is one of the main reasons why there are so many pastors in West Africa responsible for so many churches.
|
|
Leadership Training/Partnership: During this track journeyers will also follow courses designed for them in English as well which we hope will be transferable to a number of leadership training institutions in North America and Europe. Following students through classes here will also give Journeyers a deeper appreciation for the deep struggles facing leaders in this part of the world by giving them perspective for leadership they would never otherwise find following a simple leadership training track in their home country. |
